Your Road Map to our Security Industry Fitness for Work Tutorials

To help meet employer's lawful Occupational Health and Safety obligations LaneWorkSafe has specifically written two Fitness for Work tutorials aimed at the Security Industry.

These tutorials comply with AS 4801.

Alcohol is a legal drug, so are over-the-counter and prescription medications. However, when their use is abused it can cause serious ramifications to any workplace; as does the use of illegal narcotics.

Both LaneWorkSafe tutorials are written in plain English and have been prepared by industry and health experts.

An in-depth tutorial has been written for Managers and Supervisors, explaining and empowering them on how to deal with workplace impairment issues.

A second tutorial is for all other employees, new inductees and/or contractors and subcontractors.

Purpose

Both tutorials clearly explain to employees their employer's Fitness for Work Policy and what that means in the workplace.

There is a responsibility at Law for all members of staff to undertake education in OHS risk reduction and management initiatives taken to reduce workplace risk. No one wishes to see an accident or death occur in the workplace.

For Managers and Supervisors a specifically written tutorial clearly explains how issues of impairment can be legally addressed and resolved. This includes the operation of; and, the procedure to be followed when conducting a workplace alcohol test using a breath analyser.

Objective

By undertaking either of the tutorials employees receive in-depth education on how the use of drugs can affect their work performance. Impairment from drug abuse can lead to serious accident, or even death. It can also lead to a dysfunctional workplace. The objective of each tutorial is to heighten employee awareness and decrease the possibility of injury or death.

By Managers and Supervisors having the knowledge in how to identify and deal with employees at risk from substance abuse inappropriate situations can be avoided.

In the past many Managers and Supervisors simply have not had the training or the tools to address difficult questions, such as:

The Managers and Supervisors tutorial answers all of these questions and much more.

LaneWorkSafe provides a systematic framework to correctly identify and resolve workplace substance abuse issues. This successful education program helps eliminate difficult situations when impairment may be deemed a workplace safety issue.

Course Overview

Tutorial One has been specifically written for managers, supervisors and line managers.

The twenty five minute tutorial covers subjects such as:

Throughout the tutorial a series of related questions are asked. To successfully continue through to the conclusion of the tutorial the candidate must correctly answer each true or false question.

At the conclusion of the tutorial the candidate may print off a certificate of completion to be included in their personnel file.

Tutorial Two is specifically written for all other employees, inductees, visitors and contractors and takes about twenty minutes to complete.

Subjects covered include:

Throughout the tutorial a series of related questions are asked. To successfully continue through to the conclusion of the tutorial the candidate must correctly answer each true or false question.

At the conclusion of the tutorial the candidate may print off a certificate of completion to be included in their personnel file.

Conclusion

On completing either of the specifically written Fitness for Work tutorials employees, contactors and subcontractors will have gained specific knowledge concerning this most important workplace issue. As a result of this acquired knowledge employees can recognise and manage and action their responsibility towards a safer workplace environment.

By introducing a Fitness for Work Policy and associated education program the responsible employer has lawfully met a stated responsibility under Occupational Health and Safety law and Security legislation in providing employees with a wealth of information and knowledge on the issues surrounding the use or abuse of legal and illegal drugs; and, the stated company mission of eliminating risk taking which can lead to injury or death can be achieved.
